2nd Kazakhstan - U.S. Convention

The Embassy of Kazakhstan hosted "Working Together For A Secure Future: the 2nd Kazakhstan- United States Convention" on December 10 at the Willard hotel. The event was co-organized by the Council of Turkic American Associations. The Atlantic Council is a knowledge partner and provided intellectual content for the program.

The Convention is designed to explore new areas for cooperation between the United States and Kazakhstan in addressing the challenges confronting Central Asia. This year the Convention focused on the security threats facing Central Asia in the wake of the withdrawal from Afghanistan of the International Security Assistance Force. It took a close look at the commercial and economic opportunities emerging in the region.

The event will begin a conversation on the food-energy-water nexus and climate change in Central Asia. It will also discuss EXPO 17, the world fair that Kazakhstan will host in Astana on the theme “Future Energy.” The Expo will explore how energy efficiency and green technology can address the problem of climate change.

The Convention began with an introductory session and breakfast devoted to U.S.-Kazakhstan relations. The first formal session focused on the political and security issues prominent in Central Asia. The next session took a close look at economic and environmental issues, including Expo 17.

Speakers included current and former senior officials, congressmen and senators. Minister of Foreign Affairs Erlan Idrissov delivered a keynote address.
