The 3rd Kazakhstan - U.S. Convention

The Road to Astana Expo 2017Shared Prosperity and Dynamic Development

It became an established tradition to hold a Kazakhstan-US Convention in the US capital on the eve of the Kazakhstan Independence Day. This year the Convention was held on December 8 at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).

The main theme of the Convention was the forthcoming international specialized exhibition "EXPO-2017". Symbolically, the building of the USIP represents a perfect example of "green" technologies in construction.

The Convention featured a breakfast discussion with members of the US Congress, two panel sessions themed "Silk Road" and "EXPO-2017", as well as a business lunch devoted to Kazakhstan's accession to the WTO.

The attendees of the event included prominent Kazakh and U.S. representatives. The U.S. participants consisted of members of Congress, including Senator John Hoeven, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives Ed Royce, Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher R-CA, Robert Aderholt, Alcee Hastings, Xavier Beccera and others.

Representatives of the US businesses, as well as Special Assistant to President Obama Celeste Wallander; U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Bruce Andrews; U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy’s Associate Director for Energy and Environment Robert M. Simon; U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Tong; National Geographic Society’s Chief Legal Officer and Board of Trustees Secretary Terrence B. Adamson. The guests included representatives of scientific and business circles, the Kazakh diaspora and the media.

Kazakhstan was represented by the Minister for Economic Integration Zhanar Aitzhanova, Vice Minister of Agriculture Ermek Kosherbayev, Vice Minister of National Economy Aidar Arifkhanov, Chief Rabbi of Kazakhstan Yeshaya Elazar Cohen and representatives of the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, National Atomic Company Kazatomprom, Kaznex Invest, Samuryk-Energy, Astana EXPO 2017, The National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan “Atameken Union” and Fund Damu.

During the event, the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in North Dakota Howard Dahl was awarded with the medal for "the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan" for assisting in the development of cooperation between our countries in the field of agribusiness. Minister Aytzhanova also handed over letters of thanks on behalf of Prime Minister Karim Massimov to Celeste Wallander, Congressmen Rohrabacher and Aderholt for their support in the process of Kazakhstan’s accession to the WTO.

The same evening, the Embassy of Kazakhstan hosted the traditional Reception in honor of the 24th anniversary of the Independence of Kazakhstan at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Ambassador Patrick F. Kennedy, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Management served as the Chief Guest of the event.

The highlight of the evening was the performance of Diaz Musalimov, Master Student of Music in Vocal Performance in Classical Voice and Opera Studies in New York University, accompanied by the children’s choir of the Kazakh American Association  “BalaUSA”.
