Kazakhstan-US Investment Forum 2011
The Fourth Annual US-Kazakhstan Investment Forum 2011 took place at a highly auspicious time in the country’s history as Kazakhstan celebrated its 20 years of sovereign independence. The Forum, which was held at the New York's prestigious Waldorf Astoria on December 7, has been organized in association with Samruk-Kazyna, the state-owned National Welfare Fund set up to sustain the development of the country’s economy and stabilize its financial system. The Fund's assets represent more than 40 percent of Kazakhstan’s GDP and include participation in companies across a wide range of industry sectors, among them oil and gas, transportation, communications, power, finance and mining.
The format of the conference comprised a lively and informative mixture of high-level keynote addresses and panel discussions, commencing with a live video address by Prime Minister Karim Massimov, followed by a Q&A session. In addition to Erlan Idrissov, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United States, the Forum was addressed by an eminent list of speakers including Zhanar Aitzhanova, the Minister of Economic Integration Affairs, who represents Kazakhstan at negotiations on WTO accession; Aidan Karibjanov, Deputy Chairman of Samruk-Kazyna, and other high ranking Kazakh officials.
The event focused on further development of Kazakhstan’s strategic industries, covering a broad range of areas and opportunities available to foreign direct investors. Keynote addresses included amongst other subjects: The Foreign Investment Climate In Kazakhstan: Opportunities And Challenges; Samruk-Kazyna: Kazakhstan’s Engine ofDevelopment;, Nuclear Industry Perspectives in Kazakhstan; Oil and Gas – the Role of Foreign Direct Investment; Kazakhstan’s Plans for developing the Agricultural and Food Industry; and Foreign Direct Investment – the Financial and Regulatory Framework.
Panel sessions at the Forum generated stimulating debate and the caliber of participants was exemplary, with invited guests including Lorraine Hariton, Special Representative for Commercial and Business Affairs at the US Department of State, Susan Elliot, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, James Wolfenshohn, former World Bank President, James Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup and Ambassador Ross Wilson, head of the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council and others (for more details please visit the Forum’s web-site www.kazakhinvest.com).
The event, organized in partnership with Newsdesk Media Inc., concluded with further networking opportunities at a cocktail reception, followed by a concert performance by the Kazakhstan Symphony Orchestra at New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center.
